Celebrity hairstylist Chris McMillan, and owner of the Chris McMillan Salon in Beverly Hills, has cut the most beautiful heads of hair in the world, created the most famous haircut (“The Rachel”) of the last fifty years, and if you’ve ever admired Jennifer Aniston’s beachy waves, Michelle Williams’ short, chic cut, or Nicole Kidman’s glamorous retro look, then you already know McMillan’s work. When the country went into quarantine, we could think of no better person to teach us how to cut our own hair. McMillan’s shocking advice: It takes about two minutes and any old kitchen scissors.
(Full disclosure: This is a blunt cut that only works on hair that is at least shoulder-length.)
Make sure hair is clean and dry and thoroughly combed though. Grab the sharpest pair of scissors you have.
Part your hair down the middle and pull it all behind your shoulders. Do NOT tuck it behind your ears. Have your quarantine buddy pull all your hair into a low, loose ponytail without an elastic.
In as few snips as possible, have your cohabitant cut your hair where the elastic would be. Obviously, it can be higher or lower depending on how much you want to trim.
Taking care to keep the middle part intact, pull the front sections of hair in front of your nose. Have your new hairdresser pull the very front sections together. They will form a point. Snip off that point.
There is no step 5! You’re done!
