As many of us across the US are getting extra use from our snow boots right now, our inner fashion obsessives would be hard-pressed not to daydream about spring footwear. You can use this time to plan ahead for what’s coming as far as trends — which, according to the Spring 2021 runways, has a lot to do with finding balance. The greatest silhouettes will be those that add a casual note to your most elevated ensembles and bring them down to earth — no pun intended. In essence, you’ll want shoes that cross coolness with comfort.
Need a reference? Browse the silhouettes ahead — all of which are available now to shop ahead of the spring season.
Last year, flatforms (aka, platform sandals) were all the rage — but 2021 is all about keeping a lower profile. The Row’s Ginza sandal was the first to make a major splash, then designers like Stella McCartney and Tom Ford integrated similar takes on the flip-flop into their collections — typically with a wide sole and sleek finishes. Everyone will be pairing them with satin trousers or long, knit dresses all spring long.
Sandals with unexpected cuts have found their way into all of the coolest closets near and far. Cult Gaia is always known for the unexpected, making its Tao sandal a must-try. For a slightly more traditional look, Gucci’s rubber logo sandal is destined for poolside wear all spring and summer long.
Along with the updated flip-flops, another sporty sandals trend is making the rounds — the double-strap slide. Trend forecasters argue that the Birkenstock Arizona inspired the look, with options ranging from buckled styles with croc-effect leather and velcro styles with nylon. Either way, pairing the shoes with shorts and a chic blouse for a day of errands is the verified off-duty cool-girl look for spring.
To break out your spring dresses a few weeks early, you can pair them with knee-high boots for an ultra-polished look. Schutz makes a great croc-embossed option with a Western twist, while Mango’s lug-soled flat boot makes a great casual, needs-no-occasion silhouette.
As seen on Givenchy and Khaite’s Spring/Summer 2021 collections, toe-wrapping sandals are going to be major this season — especially across strappy silhouettes. Try TKEES’ flat version with a long-sleeved sundress, or pair By Far’s heeled style with a pair of stovepipe jeans and a blazer.
