“Sugar is plain and simply the devil. It’s in everything. Even oatmeal converts into your body as sugar. Fruit converts into your body as sugar. And so, when I started to understand sugar and eliminating it, let me just tell you, that detox off sugar was not pretty. So I eliminated sugar and I added greens. A fresh green juice will take you out of a fasted state. No fruit, like a pure celery, with kale, ginger, spinach… anything in your fridge that’s green and good to use. Or for pre-made juices, anything that’s cold-pressed, but it will go bad if you don’t drink it within a few days. Essentially, I added things that would alkalize. I started to really understand the difference between alkalizing and acidity. Drinking lemon water also creates alkalinity. Dairy is really inflammatory to the body. Our cows are just not super healthy so I tend to go more towards sheep’s or goat’s cheese and stay away from cow’s dairy. Raw dairy would be the preferred source of cow’s dairy, but it’s very hard to find. Five pounds will fall off with no dairy or gluten. I like gluten, but be mindful of it. You want to go to carbohydrates that are fiber-rich and slow-burning, like sweet potatoes, lentils, butternut squash, chickpeas, and quinoa. Those are the things that are higher in fiber.”
“Coffee is acidic, and most of us are coffee drinkers. Most people wake up, don’t have water, and go right to the coffee. That’s a very acidic moment for us all. I’m going to ask that you flood your body with hydration before the coffee. The hardest thing to start doing is to drink a greens powder or hot water with lemon before the coffee. The hot water with lemon will alkalize the body. Lemons are like the yellow canary diamonds of the wellness world. They are acidic until you ingest them, and then they create alkalinity. During my health journey, something I was going through as I was figuring out how to get off these antacids, was that I was still having really bad reflux. The way that I solved that was by drinking hot water and lemon after dinner, and it would help soothe my stomach after a meal. And I still do that. It just helps your body. Lemon also is amazing because it creates peristalsis. It creates that contraction in the colon that helps signal it’s time to have a bowel movement. It’s just a beautiful, magical thing that creates alkalinity in the body.”
“We, as a culture, put food on top of food on top of food. The average American snacks over 20 times a day. My tip is to feast, famine, feast, famine, repeat. And that basically means don’t snack. I do not want you to snack throughout the day. By snacking, you are always engaging your insulin levels and you’re really not tapping into those fat stores for energy. Blood sugar spikes are bad because what goes up must come down and these crashes and cravings leave you in a worse state than before.”
“The secret to conquering your cravings is balancing your blood sugar. You spike your blood sugar by snacking. Especially if you eat something super sugary, it spikes your blood sugar, releases insulin (which is a fat storage hormone), and then it comes crashing down and you end up wanting more sugar. Keep in mind, consuming fiber blunts the blood sugar spike”
“I think that bloating was my inspiration for creating Alkalize because I don’t know about you, but there are a lot of mornings when I just wake up feeling bloated or puffy. We live in a very acidic world. So make sure that you are getting enough magnesium in your day. I have this little funny phrase called ABA, always be alkalizing. Save your carbohydrates for the end of the day, which is the opposite of what most people tell you. Allow your body to tap into your fat stores for energy and to not spike your blood sugar throughout the day.”
