Beauty...
I could go on and on but I’ll get right to the point. No one is perfect. NO ONE. And, no mother is perfect. So let’s stop trying to guilt ourselves and others into trying to be. I even dedicated an entire chapter in my new book, Everyday Chic to this sentiment called Keeping Sh*t Real. It’s all about embracing the imperfection and what I like to refer to as your happy mess.
If you take a scroll through my Instagram, you’ll probably see that my children are smiling in every photo. I could lie to you and say that it happens naturally but that’s usually not the case. Here’s how it normally goes down: After much bribing, I finally get each of them to change out of their play shirts and into something cute. Now it’s time to get them to sit still so I bribe with more cheddar bunnies. Brooks is a bit older now so he knows that the faster he smiles, the faster we can be done. But, Grey and Scarlett? It’s more of a struggle. I’ve even recruited people to stand behind my phone and sing songs to them. By the time I get all three of my children smiling, I’m sweating and panting. That’s just one example. There are many.
Like when I’m rushing out the door to go to a meeting and it takes me hours to realize there is a spit up stain on my shirt. Or when my kids are fighting over a monkey shaped plate at dinner and end up throwing food at each other from opposite ends of the table. Yes, this is the behind-the-scenes of motherhood. And no one can prepare you for it.
As mommas, we’ve all been in the position where we feel like everyone is doing it better than us. But, guess what? I’m here to tell you that we’re all in this together. I don’t know one momma who hasn’t dealt with a temper tantrum at a grocery store or a horrible travel experience with a toddler. Yes, even the one who always seems to have her sh*t together! Motherhood, in ALL it’s glory, can be quite messy.
In honor of the 73 Questions videos from Vogue (that I’m obsessed with!), I wanted to recreate my own parody version. I decided to play that perfect mom we’ve all wished we could be at one point or another. The one who has it all figured out. And guess what? IT’S NOT REAL.
And, now I welcome you into the home of “The Perfect Mother”. Come on in!
I hope you enjoyed my parody. It was so fun to shoot! I’d love to hear your thoughts and stories on any mom guilt you’ve felt since having children. Or any struggles you’ve had while striving to be the perfect mother, wife, sister, friend, everything.
