Kids DIY: (Edible) Finger Paint Ice Cream

Wow! It’s been a hot one out here in the Hamptons. To cool down, we’ve been lucky enough to get weekly visits from the local ice cream man. The second Brooksie hears the truck coming down the road, it’s total chaos. I’m pretty sure he has some sixth sense that makes him hear it from miles away!

Call me a “bad mom” but ice cream is totally a food group in the summertime. Recently, we heard the truck and we were so excited that our friend, Maeve was in town to enjoy it too!

Once we got enough time in the sun, it was craft time. And since we weren’t messy enough (yeah, right!) we got out the finger paints and made our own ice cream cones with our hands…literally!

This may just look like a fun way to beat the heat but finger paint is also a perfect activity for growing minds.

Here are some benefits of finger paints for your toddlers and pre-schoolers:

1) Improves Fine Motor Skills: Finger painting strengthens the muscles in little fingers and hands that help prepare for writing.

2) Teaches Colors: When you use different paints, children can explore mixing and creating new colors while brushing up on the ones they already know.

3) Stimulates Creativity: There are no rules in finger paint. Well, other than stay as far away from all white walls as possible! Finger painting is also easier than manipulating a brush which gives them the freedom to create practically anything their little heart desires.

Oh, and did I mention this finger paint is edible? Yes! I’m not saying eat it for dessert but it’s soothing to know your children are playing with something non-toxic.

Ingredients:

  • Recycled paint container
  • 4 tbsp. sugar
  • 1/2 cup of cornstarch (I substituted with flour)
  • 2 cups cold water
  • Organic food coloring of your choice

Directions:

STEP 1: Stir 4 tablespoons of sugar and 1/2 cup cornstarch (or flour) together. Add 2 cups of cold water and heat over medium heat until the mixture is thick (the mixture will further thicken as it cools).

STEP 2: Divide into containers and add food coloring as desired.
