Puffer coat owners can typically be broken into two camps: those who wear them out of necessity (i.e. living in a below-freezing climate), and those who find them to be chic. This season, thanks to a whole host of new silhouettes from fashion labels running the gamut, the two don’t have to be mutually exclusive. To make it simple, we’re digging into the good, the bad, and the sustainable puffers on the market this winter — and disclosing which will keep you warm without compromising style.
Whether you favor cropped cuts or ankle-length styles, shop ahead for the best of the best, in every shape and shade:
This long mustard coat from, the elevated basics brand, COS is bound to breathe life into your winter wardrobe. It features knit cuffs, which means it’ll keep your arms nice and warm — plus, it’s ethically made from responsible down and recycled polyester.
If you like for everything in your closet to have that cloud-soft feel, go with BB Dakota’s quilted panel puffer. An added bonus: it has a snap flap and hidden zip placket, so you can change up your look each time you wear it.
This piece is as good as it sounds. With a shell made from water bottles (18, to be exact) and stuffed with recycled down, Everlane gives this puffer a rating of “Super Warm” — making it high on our list, too.
This rare under-$100 puffer comes in a trove of hues, but we’re loving this icy blue, as it’s perfect for pairing with winter whites. Its drawstring hemline can be tightened over sweaters and knits, to trap all of the warmth in.
Speaking of colors — we’re doing whatever it takes to liven up shadowy winter wardrobes this season, and that includes prioritizing colorful outerwear. In its Mauve color-way, Urban Outfitters’s puffer makes the perfect piece to style with sundresses in early spring.
Made with a blend of natural and recycled materials (merino wool, Tencel, and recycled nylon included), Allbirds’ new puffer brings together the best of both worlds for a must-have coat that’s warm and weatherproof.
For a slightly more sporty look, Ganni’s technical coat comes with all the cachet of Scandi fashion girls with the quality of Italian-made outerwear. Featuring color-blocked beige and black panels, this is bound to become your wear-with-everything staple coat.
ICYMI: Shearling is having a moment this season, by way of Chanel bags, winter boots, and everything in between. Consider inviting the texture into your puffer look for added warmth — Coach’s aviator-inspired coat makes it easy, with a removable shearling collar for a look you can mix up from one day to the next.
