[Jen] On Keeping Up With Hair Trends

“Here’s the thing about trends. I feel like it was so much easier back in the day when we just had magazines. Now, with TikTok and social media, I feel like the idea of a trend is really gone because everything is just at our disposal now. There’s so much inspiration out there, so I feel like the biggest thing is to find what works for you. I’m really sick of everybody living in a claw clip. I think we have to figure it out. But my biggest thing about trends really is based on the fact that beauty really makes people feel a certain way. It’s really important to experiment. Don’t feel like you need to be stuck in the same look for a long period of time. It’s really important to try different routines and experiment.”

[Jen] On Tips & Care for Every Hair Type

“Your relationship with your hair colorist and hair cutter is a really important one. You want them to be honest with you. You want to find somebody who isn’t looking to just have an Instagram moment where you’re their guinea pig. I definitely think you have to take into consideration a professional point of view because there are so many rules. A lot of the time, you go and get a haircut every three months. I say maybe push it to every five months and go to somebody really good who is maybe a little bit more expensive and a little bit more seasoned. But the rule that you should cut your hair every three months is a myth because really, you’re focusing on split ends. If your ends are really fried, you definitely want to cut them. But I don’t think you need to do it every three months and don’t cut more than about half an inch. I always tell clients to get Biotin and Fish Oil pills. If your hair is really dry and looking kind of fried, the OUAI Gloss is amazing. It lasts three washes and makes your hair reflect light, look shinier, and much healthier. Dry shampoo is everybody’s best friend. I wash my hair twice a week. But it’s your hair. So if you have an oily scalp or live somewhere where you sweat a lot, you’re going to want to wash it more.”

[Jen] On the Importance of Scalp Health

“What’s happened is called ‘the skinification of hair,’ where I think that everyone has realized they need to treat their scalp like they would their face. Find the right shampoo for your hair. I’m a big preacher in using two different ones because your scalp and your ends need two very different things, and it’s really important to take care and regulate your hair from your scalp, to the ends. OUAI has a Detox Shampoo and an Anti-Dandruff Shampoo that have both been doing so well. There’s also a Scalp Serum that helps to regulate your scalp. Scalp health is so important for the hair growth that you want, if you’re trying to grow your hair out and get it really long and healthy, it’s really important to start at the root, focusing on your scalp.”
